To
the Board --
What were you thinking? Michael Moran is the face of TCAN!
He's the reason we got involved; he's the reason we've donated merchandise
and money; he's the reason we became members and avid attendees; he's
the reason we've told so many people about this wonderful resource!
I understand one of many disputes has been over TCAN's name, so let
me share a story. Most of my career has been in media and marketing.
In the early 1980's, when I was Promotion Director of the Boston Herald,
I had a meeting with some folks who were starting an entertainment
venue west of Boston. It was called The Centrum InWorcester. When
I left the Herald in 1985 for Middlesex News, one of my goals was
to get chummy with this neighbor. Every promotion, paid ad, and editorial
story used the phrase "The Centrum In Worcester."
It was mandatory, and they were adamant about it. Only many years
later, when they were well-established, did they drop the "Worcester."
Why TCAN would want to throw away their brand equity
so early in the game is beyond me. You see, The Centrum In Worcester
was smart. (1) By including the location, they gave prominence to
their much-maligned city and (2) they forced all of us in the media
to tell everyone where it was each and every time. The TCAN Board
could learn a lesson here. (PS: The Centrum In Worcester is doing
OK)
My purpose in writing is to urge you to reinstate
Michael Moran with commensurate compensation. A Fundraising/Development
Director is not necessarily an Executive Director. They have different
skills and responsibilities.
While I'm sure your chosen individual is a fine person, it does
not mean that he has the charisma, energy, relentless work ethic
and vision to rally people around him. Michael does.
As my husband wrote yesterday, we are sorely disappointed in the
behind-closed-door behavior of the Board. You have taken something
pure in spirit and turned it into nasty politics. As a member, I
would like to receive a copy of the by-laws, specifically with
regard to Board elections, nominations and dismissals.
Sincerely,
Jill Baker
